We’re getting ready for all the new Random Acts of Helpfulness we’re doing in 2020, but before we do, we’re taking a trip down memory lane with our Helpful for the Holidays recap!
We kicked off our Helpful Holiday week by making a visit to the families of Family Gateway. Family Gateway provides stability and life-changing supportive services to children and families affected by homelessness. We helped over 25 families, about 150 people, with a fully catered holiday dinner complete with all the fixin’s! From chicken n’ dumplings, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, turkey n’ dressing to some delicious apple pie – the families were more than grateful, thankful, for a plate-full of food! “This meal is so good!” one resident told us. Another mentioned that his meal was, “…so good, I wish you would come back every day!” And to help the families even more for the holidays, we provided each with a gift card to their favorite store. “I don’t have much, and I have eight kids with me here. I am so happy I can give them each a present for Christmas. Thank y’all so much!”
Next, we headed to Arlington to surprise a few lucky kids and teens with a special, and very unexpected, two-wheeled gift: brand new bikes! The Boys & Girls Club East Arlington Branch is a place where the city’s youth can learn leadership skills, develop new friendships, is a place where a child feels important, and a place for them to have FUN! And fun was had by all! We surprised 25 members with brand new bikes, something many of the kids have never owned before. “I’ve never had a bike, EVER. This is the best day of my life!” Each kid was provided a helmet and lock to help keep their bikes, and their heads, safe, too.
Lastly, we wanted to help those who do so much and sacrificed themselves for us – our local heroes – our veterans. The Fisher House in Dallas acts as a “home away from home” providing free temporary lodging for families of VA patients. We served up another delicious holiday meal for families staying at the Fisher House, and the veterans were appreciative of the meal. “Thank you for this. My husband is staying here for the next few days, and we’re just so taken back by your generosity.” To help the families when they eventually return home, we also provided gift cards to their favorite store, too. “This is awesome. We’re missing Christmas because we’re here, so when we go home, we’ll make sure to get our grandkids some belated holiday gifts with this. Thank you!”
